Negative Body Image Or Body Dysmorphic Disorder?

One of the ways negative body image can become very serious is a condition called Body Dysmorphic Disorder. BDD is when people get obsessed with something about their body to the point that it makes it hard for them to function. Usually the part of their body they are worried about is barely even noticeable by other people or it may not exist. People with BDD may have anxiety and avoid going out or doing things with people because they are afraid people may see what they think is wrong with them. This article about a new therapy is interesting because it talks about doing the opposite of what I thought would be treatment. I would think that you would want to distract the person from being aware of their body and looking at it but instead they encourage people with BDD to look at themselves in a mirror for a long time and confront their negative feelings. Then they also might work on things to say to themselves instead of the negative feelings (CBT or a YOU-Turn). Here is the article!
